There's no fretting with Steel Guitar!
You hold your steel onto the string to get the note you want,
using the fret-line as a guide...

You're basically
Playing guitar with one metal finger!

In some respects it's easier than learning "regular guitar" as there's no fingertip pain or awkward contorting of the fingers into "chord shapes", or pressing strings down against frets with the required force & dexterity to overcome string-buzz or dead notes.
The downside is that you need to gain control of "intonation", as the note is not "fixed" by the position of a fret.

The bar itself should touch the string directly above the fret-line to sound the note required, ultimately using your ear to determine if you're in tune - the fret-line should be thought of as a guide!
Hold the bar onto the string with enough pressure to prevent unwanted rattling as the played string vibrates, but not so much that you push the note sharp.

There are two main types of bar, or "steel", for playing "lap-style",
the "Stevens" or "Grooved" Bar... & the "Bullet" Bar.
Each type has it's pros & cons, you'll probably try a bunch of different steels before you settle on the shape & weight that you prefer.
Many players switch between different steels depending on what tune/style they're playing.

It really makes sense to amass a good collection of bars, even if you settle on one as a "favourite" it's refreshing to mix it up a bit... A change of tone & feel can be inspirational if you're searching for new ideas or stuck in a rut, even if it means that you still go back to your usual choice.

Also, it makes you a really easy person to buy a gift for!
Come Birthday or Christmas, no-one you know can ever say "I don't know what to get you!"

 

Technique for holding the bar

No matter which type of bar you go for, if you're new to playing Steel Guitar it's a good idea to hold your bar A LOT, to get used to the feel of it in your hand.
Just keep it in your pocket, whip it out (!) and hold it whenever you can, watching TV, walking the dog or whatever!
Pretty soon it will feel like it's become an extension of your own hand.

The techniques for holding each type of bar differ somewhat, so here are some pointers to get you on your way.
The most important thing is that you have a R E L A X E D grip, and practice well!

Method for Grooved Bar

Grip the bar gently by placing your thumb and middle finger in the grooves on the side of the bar...

Rest your index finger along the top of the bar, this helps with accurate control, as you can effectively use your innate "pointing reflex" to target the position of the bar.

Use your remaining fingers to rest on the strings behind the bar, to mute unwanted string noise.

Method for Bullet Bar

The method is very similar to holding a grooved bar, except the index finger is more relaxed, applying a little pressure with the fingertip for guidance rather than having it laid flat along the top of the bar.

Again the little ("pinky") & ring-fingers are used for behind-the-bar damping.

With either bar, the key is to have a relaxed grip!

Playing Techniques

Open Strings

One of the simplest techniques is to draw the bar back towards you, leaving the higher strings to ring "open" ie: unbarred.

This easy method gives access to more varied chordal playing.
this is explained further on the "Chords" page.

Sliding the bar forwards to rebar the higher strings is easier with a bullet-bar's rounded nose.
With a Stevens bar just tilt the nose up slightly by increasing pressure on the rear of the bar, to avoid the bottom edge "hooking up" on the strings.

 

Single-string playing & "double-stops"

By angling the bar so it's higher at the back (the end closest to you) and just using the tip/"nose" end of the bar, you can play one string at a time.

This is easier on the 1st string, on the lower strings be sure to not catch the bar on the string above.

If you're crafty & practice well you can bar two adjacent strings without affecting any open strings.

Bar "blocking"

By lifting the bar off the string you can mute or "block" the note, leave your finger/s on the string/s behind the bar so it stops ringing.

Just as importantly this technique can be used in reverse...
Let your bar-hand's muting fingers touch down an instant before the bar, to avoid unnecessary bar-chatter caused by a vibrating string rattling against the bar as it is applied.

 

Vibrato

This is the technique which is employed to add a "wavering" quality to the pitch of the note being played.

With "regular" acoustic or electric guitar, vibrato is applied by alternately pushing & pulling a fretted string up & down with a repetetive motion, in line with the fret.
On a classical guitar this motion is applied in line with the string ( as it is with a fretless instrument such as a violin. )

With Steel Guitar, vibrato is achieved by oscilllating the bar left & right along the string, thus varying the length ( & pitch ) of the note being played.
The advantage that Steel Guitar has over Regular Guitar is that it's much easier to apply vibrato to multiple strings / chords.

There are basically two differing methods of applying vibrato on Steel Guitar, by sliding or rolling the bar.

The sliding technique is pretty self-explanatory. The bar is simply slid left & right (or in small circles) at the required speed & amplitude to get the desired effect.

Rolling vibrato is applied by letting the bar rotate using it's contact point with the strings as a pivot-point.
This requires a subtle grip, almost letting go of the bar and using the index-finger along the top as the main holding-point.
The diameter of the bar ( or, in the case of a grooved bar, the radius of the playing surface ) has an effect on the nature of the vibrato achieved when using this "rolling" method.

Vibrato is a very personal thing which, along with control of intonation, gives steel guitar it's distinctive vocal-like emotive sound.

Playing with no vibrato can sound "dead" and any innacurracy in intonation will show up like a sore thumb... But don't overdo it or use it to hide a lack of correct intonation!

 

To quote Bob Brozman: "The best way to describe how the vibrato motion works is by comparing it to the way you might wiggle a small dish of Jello in somebody's face to make them nervous."

Pull-Offs

A "Pull-Off" is a note which isn't sounded by plucking the string with the picking hand, but by removing the bar during the previously ringing note.

The nature of steel guitar playing means that the note pulled-off to will be an open string...

Non-bullet bar users can get a snappier, louder sounding pull-off by using the end of the bar.
Without lifting the bar, draw it towards you, so the end comes off the string.
The more pressure is applied during the pull-off, the louder the note will sound.
Used subtly, this technique can give the pull-of the same timbre as a picked note.
This only works with a bar that has an edge on the end, not a bullet or rounded nose.
Bullet-bar players can bounce the nose a little to sound a pull-off note.

 

Hammer-Ons

A "Hammer-On" is a note which isn't sounded by picking, but by having the bar placed with authority onto a still-ringing previous note's string.

 

 

Playing Behind the Bar

When playing notes where the bar is at one of the open strings harmonic "nodes", (ie: 12th,7th,5th,etc) a "shimmering overtone" effect can be acheived, to hear the full effect pick or strum the string/s behind the bar halfway betwwen the steel & the nut.

Ensure that no part of your bar-hand is in contact with the desired string or strings behind the bar.

 
Pulling behind the Bar

Use your left middle finger to pull a string behind the bar to raise the pitch.

This technique gives a nice simulation of a pedal-steel guitar sound and can open the door to more complex and varied chords.

 

Slants

Crafty trick to access different chord voicings by placing the bar at an angle to the fret-lines instead of parallel...

These can be forward or reverse, using adjacent strings or by crossing strings.

This advanced technique is considered easier to perform with a bullet-bar, although Dobro players like Stacy Phillips executes even tricky reverse-slants with a grooved bar.

The trick is to use the tip of your index-finger as the pivot-point.
It helps to "arch" the finger slightly in this case, rather than having it laying flat on the top of the bar.

Bars & Steels

The "Stevens" or grooved steel is easy to hold and as such it's a good bar to get started on.


It most suits playing styles where the bar is lifted or tilted during play, so is good for music involving hammer-ons & pull-offs, rapidfire licks or a "Bluegrassy" flavour.

The "Bullet" bar is a plain cylinder with a rounded tip or "nose".
This style of bar is favoured my many seasoned players, and is the bar of choice for most electric steel players.


Some players find this bar makes advanced techniques such as slants more attainable.
Often there is a small indentation in the end opposite the nose that aids the grip during this manouevre.

Material, weight and surface finish all have an influence on tone...

Generally speaking the heavier the bar, the more volume and sustain.

Common materials include steel(obviously!) or brass, glass, ceramic or plastic.
Metal bars may be chrome or nickel plated.

The variation of sound resulting from the various properties such as hardness, coefficient of friction etc is highly complex and quite subjective as far as what's most "pleasing"...

What's best is to get as many different ones as you can & try 'em out.

You may favour one type for a certain song, style/genre or situation.

It's more colours for your tonal pallette!

They all feel different in the hand & open the ear to the subtle nuances of a guitar's voice.

The steel bar which gives Steel Guitar it's name has it's origins in the "found object".

Various commonly used items were pressed into use, and purpose-made steels were developed from these.

Many variations in timbre and sustain can be achieved through the ingenious use of found objects, a plastic "Clipper" or "Swan" cigarette lighter being a good example, for an interesting tone with fast decay.
( think "banjo crossed with steel-drum" or psycho toybox if fingerpicked high-up. )
This sounds slightly less bonkers than the "Oink-Tone" bar.

 

 

Bar diameter
The diameter (or radius of the playing area in the case of a grooved bar ) has an effect on your vibrato.
A bar with a larger diameter will have a more pronounced vibrato than a smaller one, when using a "rolling vibrato" technique.

Bar Reviews

What constitutes "good tone" is highly subjective, so there can't really be such a thing as a "good" or "bad" review...
For example one players definition of "bright with clarity & sparkle" may be "harsh & tinny" to another.
Also everyone will have their own tastes and preferances when it comes to bar size/shape & style depending on their playing style and/or favoured genre of music!

Basically, everyone's hands & ears are different!
So, what follows is an impartial rundown of the characteristics of a bunch of bars based on comparison & my own personal experience & opinion...

These bullet bars weigh from 3.4 to 6oz (95-170g) and come in a range of lengths and diameters.
(Even custom colours are available!)

What sets these apart is the high-tech material and manufacturing process which means that these produce the least unwanted string noise of any bar. On the unwound strings the TriboTone bar is virtually silent!

 

The tone is full & well-rounded with plenty of clarity, "oomph" & sweetness.

Unlike any other bar these actually "wear in" rather than wear out.
The surface actually improves with use!

Another advantage is that they are incredibly easy to hold onto...
Somehow (and seemingly against logic), the wonder-material that makes these bars slide virtually friction-free & so noiselessly along the strings also provides an unbelievably secure grip in the hand!

I thought I'd never really get to love a bullet-bar until I tried one of these!

Speaking personally, a Tribo-Tone bar shaped like a Tipton/LapDawg would be the absolute ultimate bar of all time!

 

   


Lap-Dawg

The sharp nose makes pull-offs loud & clear but watch out for the edge when sliding the bar forward onto open strings! (Lean it back a little or you'll hook up the nose!)

 

 

The chromed brass Dunlop Lap-Dawg has a wider radius on the playing surface than many other grooved bars, making it behave much more like a large-diameter bullet-bar when employing the "rolling vibrato" technique.

For a small bar it has a reasonable weight, sustaining well with a nice bright crisp tone.

The chrome-plate is hard-wearing & lasts well.

I was hooked on these bars until I found Ron Tipton's bar which is a little longer, heavier & has a more refined shape, fuller tone & even thicker harder chrome-plate.

   


These ceramic bars are available in a wide range of different shapes and a wonderful array of glaze colour options, each giving a subtle variation to their distinctive tone.

You can even specify your tonal preferance & have your bar made with glaze type & thickness tweaked to emulate the tone of your choice!

 

 

Rocky Mountain Slides offer a "Stevens"-shaped bar like no other... The "Rail-Rocket".
Let me tell you, this thing is HUGE!!
It's a real handful of tone...
Subtle it ain't!

Their take on the bullet-bar has a rail-style gripper on the top.

Also available is the "Hot Spike" which is a plain cylinder with flat ends. and the top left unglazed.
Their "Chapita" is a smaller version of the same and my favourite of the bunch.

Tonewise these bars really are unique in that you can have that unique warm ceramic-bar tone with the "flavour" of a steel, brass or glass bar, whichever you prefer!

   

Paloma Stone Slides offer a range of different shaped ceramic tonebars made from high-fire stoneware clay with an ultra-durable glazed surface.


The "Stevens"-style bars are available with different heights & the option of a rounded nose on one end.
The top of the bar is unglazed giving a nice tactile feel & secure grip.

Bullet-bars are offered with a choice of diameters, with or without thumb-indent.

These bars are quite light in weight, which may be an advantage to someone who has trouble keeping hold of a heavier bar, or one who finds a lighter bar easier to move around fast.
Despite the lack of mass they give surprisingly good sustain and have a warm mellow tone of their own.

The two different glaze options yield a subtly different sound.

   

The Shubb GS-1 features a contoured wooden handle making it lighter & easier to grip, with a pleasant "organic" feel in the hand.
The unplated stainless playing surface is a little noisier than a chrome or nickel-plated bar, and the lack of mass gives this bar a little less volume & sustain than some other bars.

Shubb-Pearse offer a range of different shaped tonebars based on the grooved design,the SP1 features a rounded "semi-bullet" nose with cutaway.

The SP range have a chrome-plate finish which doesn't seem quite as thick or smooth as the plating on the Lap-Dawg or Tipton, so string-noise is a little more noticable.
Tonewise these are "strong" bars.
